About Us:

Our History

Edenwald’s history of service goes back more than a century, but the values and ideas that shape us are always forward-thinking. From our roots in Baltimore City to our transformational work to create Maryland’s first and only college-enriched senior living community, Edenwald has always been more than just a place to live. It’s your place to thrive.

1881: Rooted in Greater Baltimore

Our senior living community was founded in June 1881 as The General German Aged People’s Home of Baltimore. The community, which became known as the Greisenheim, was established to care for older German citizens.

In 1936, the Greisenheim moved from its downtown location to a modern building in the Irvington section of Baltimore City. It merged with another care center in the early 1980s, and the combined community then moved to our current site in Towson, Maryland, in 1985.

1985: Partnering with Goucher College

When Edenwald moved to our current Towson location in 1985, the land we built on was purchased from Goucher College, a neighboring campus and an award-winning liberal arts college. That purchase was just the beginning of Edenwald’s work with Goucher College. For more than four decades, we have become more than just good neighbors. We have become true community partners.

2008: Expanding Our Footprint

In 2008, Edenwald welcomed residents into The Terraces, a 12-story addition to our flagship Tower Apartments. The 254,000 square-foot expansion included 54 new independent living apartments that carry all the hallmarks of a luxury Edenwald residence: open floor plans, picturesque balconies, beautiful natural light, and more. The expansion also featured a state-of-the-art wellness center, a 120-car parking garage, and a rooftop garden and putting green.

2024: Launching the College-Enriched Senior Living Community Model

In 2024, Edenwald and Goucher College formally joined forces to transform Edenwald into the first university retirement community (URC) in Maryland. This innovative model combines lifelong learning and programming of a college with the attractive residences, services, and amenities of a LifePlan (or continuing care retirement) community.

That same year we also launched a new logo and tagline—It Never Gets Old—both of which reflect our commitment to redefining the senior living experience.

2024: A Commitment to INSPIRE Our Community

Our transformation into a college-enriched senior living community also includes plans for a physical expansion. In 2024, Edenwald unveiled details about the plans for its newest residences, the INSPIRE Towers, three independent living towers to be built directly on Goucher College’s campus.
